“But the recollection came more often when someone approached me with a question like ‘What will the dollar–sterling exchange rate be ten years from now?’ My response – and I strongly believe the only appropriate response – was along the lines of ‘If you tell me why you are asking that, I will try to help you formulate a more sensible question which it may be possible to answer. But that reply was not often well received. Frequently the problem was that the individual concerned had been asked the question by their boss, who – like Sir Denys– had to be placated. Or they were building a spreadsheet and this number was required to fill a vacant cell.
