This, I would suggest, is the social tension at the heart of the American experiment. Itâs what makes us churn. In diverse settings we have questions: âGiven my identity and the stereotypes about it, can I trust this situation?â âWill I be valued here?â âTreated fairly?â âWill I be heard here?â The struggle to answer these questionsâto figure out how oneâs identity will play out in a situationâ is what churn is.
